March 2008 Newsletter

Redskins Tickets: Money is due for the club's Redskins tickets. $28,775 is the bill. It is $968 a set. With parking, it is $1318 - parking adds $350, but there are only 13 parking passes. Money is due March 30th. Frank Gulino is coordinating for us again.

Bob Beatty Award: Several potential candidates have been received. The nomination form was sent to the FHSA membership and to local coaches to encourage nominees. If you have a nomination, please submit it via mail to the above address or email to Richard McFarland (rmcfarland@dcscorp.com) by the 14th of March. This will ensure that we can make a selection and then a formal presentation at the membership meeting in April.

West Potomac Sports Boosters / Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Golf Tournament: A joint Golf tournament with the West Potomac Sports Booster Club is scheduled for Monday, June 9th at the Old Hickory Golf Course in Prince William County. The Boosters have been very successful raising a lot of money in the past through corporate sponsors for their golf events - the Sportsmen will also be looking for sponsorships and tee sponsorships. We will be working with the Sports Boosters to coordinate activities. Rick Genuario is our coordinator.

Swim Carnival: : Jim Schlesinger has scheduled the Carnival for a mid-week June 25th date.

DINNER MEETING: The next Sportsmen's Dinner Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Cedar Knoll Restaurant along the George Washington Parkway, one mile north of the Mount Vernon Estate. This is the first time we have been back at the Cedar Knoll in many years Valentine's Dance Follow-Up: The Valentine's Dance on February 9th was a success. Attendees had a great time and the Sportsmen's actually made $132.81. Our goal is not to make or lose money, just break even. This is the first year that board members can remember making money on the event. 72 guests attended. The salmon dinner was complimented and the extra menu choices appreciated. Next years event will be on February 7, 2009 as the MVCC has already booked the 14th for the MVCC Club members. Photos and a short write-up from the Valentine's Day Dance have been added to the website.

Nationals Tailgate: Has been moved to July, as the Golf Tournament will be our June event. We are targeting the weekend of July 12 for a Nationals Tailgate Party. Pat Malone has said that he will bring along several of the players from his baseball team, the Alexandria Aces to the tailgate/game to increase interest.

Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Annual Valentine's Dance

The Fort Hunt Sportsmen enjoyed another successful Valentine's Day Dance at Mount Vernon Country Club on Saturday, February 9th. This Sportsmen's tradition has been going on for many years and gives our members a chance to bring along their wives and girlfriends to meet other club members.
The ladies were treated to corsages and boxes of Godiva chocolates. Dinner was served and dancing for all took place for the remainder of the evening. Our special thanks go out to Harry Shackelford, Craig Maniglia and Robert Hines for coordinating the event and to our numerous sponsors for the sponsor giveaways. Our president, Jim Martin served as our competent Master of Ceremonies.

February 2008 Newsletter

The Valentine's Dance is set for this Saturday, February 9th. Mount Vernon Country Club has confirmed our date. Lee Gilmore has confirmed the DJ. Harry Shackelford continues to accept reservations up through the 6th of Feb.
Please send Harry an email (hshackelford1@cox.net) indicating how many people will be part of your group. Price for the dinner dance is $125 per couple. This will be a cash bar and dinner will be one of three choices, New York Strip Steak, Cornish Chicken, or Salmon.

Jeff Dietze Retirement Ceremony: The FHSA Board recognized Jeff Dietze's contributions to the Fort Hunt area by sending Chick Little to Jeff's Retirement Ceremony on January 29th and making a plaque presentation from the Sportsmen. Richard McFarland also attended as did School Board members, teachers, students and athletes. Mr. Dietze mentioned the Sportsmen's Club in his farewell speech and passed along his appreciation of our support. He is the most senior tenured Athletic Director in Fairfax County and quite possibly in the whole state. The football field will be officially named Jeff Dietze Field in his honor. Mr. Dietze's efforts will be missed.

Donation Requests: In the past we have not publicized Donation requests. However, this year I will provide that information since the money comes from the street sales, and corporate sponsors. The process calls for donation requests being sent to the board of consideration. Each year, the board develops a budget based on prior year's requests. When a written request is received, it is checked against the budget, discussed amongst the board members and if approved a check for the requested amount is written and sent out within a couple of days. At the last board meeting, Rick Genuario read letters requesting the following donations:

Woodlawn Little League - $400
Fairfax County Public School Run Group - March 29th event - $100
Belle View Elementary School - $250
Stratford Landing Elementary School Fun Run - $100
Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association Basketball - $1000
Fort Hunt Elementary School “Fleet Foxes” Run - $250
West Potomac Crew - $400
All of the above requests passed Board vote and checks will be mailed.

Bob Beatty Award: Attached is the Bob Beatty Award nomination form. It has been sent to the President of the Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association for dissemination. If you have a nomination, please submit it via mail to the above address or email to Richard McFarland (rmcfarland@dcscorp.com) by the 14th of March. This will ensure that we can make a selection and then a formal presentation at the membership meeting in April.

Willie Pile: Is lining up sponsorship and will return to the area on May 24th to do another Life Skills Football Camp – Willie has secured the newly named Jeff Dietze Football field for this event. Last year's event attracted between 70-80 participants. Several pro football players, college players and high school players also attended to lend assistance.

Swim Carnival: Jim Schlesinger has scheduled the Carnival for a mid-week June 25th date.

Nationals Tailgate: We are targeting the weekend of June 7th for a Nationals Tailgate Party.

2007 Bob Beatty Award

Bob Beatty was a leader for the Fort Hunt Sportsmen for many years. He made so many contributions to the Club, that when he passed, the Club decided to sponsor an award in his name. The Bob Beatty Award is a competitive award presented to young athletes with outstanding personal achievements in sports, scholastics and in their dedication to the community. All these traits were valued by Bob Beatty and the Fort Hunt Sportsmen.

The winner of the 2007 Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Bob Beatty Award was Mara Perscheid - a West Potomac High School student, where she not only excels in sports, but is a National Honor Society member who maintains a 3.95 Grade Point Average. At age 15, Mara was one of the youngest athletes ever in U.S. Taekwondo history to qualify for the U.S. Nationals Team Trials, where she won three elimination matches. Mara also volunteers locally in her neighborhood and for several local service organizations. Mara is an excellent example of what any Fort Hunt area youth athlete should strive to be and all of us will be cheering her on to qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Our other special guest is Mr. Willie Pile; a West Potomac H.S. & Va. Tech graduate and an NFL veteran who sponsors a youth-oriented Life Skills Program and Football Camp for young athletes. Willie was kind enough to provide a speech to the group and present the Bob Beatty Award to Mara.

Joe Gililland, President of the Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Association with the Perscheid Family. We were all very proud of Mara.

Mara and Joe share a light moment when Mara pulled a winning ticket for the award program's 50/50 raffle.

Let Harry know as soon as possible how many will be attending as part of your group.

As a reminder, Jeff Dietze has announced his retirement as the West Potomac High School Athletic Director. Jeff will be leaving at the end of January, 2008. The FHSA Board would like to recognize Jeff's contributions to the Fort Hunt area at his Retirement Ceremony. Those of you who have known Jeff over the years are encouraged to send me a sentence or two on some of the significant contributions he has made during the years. I will take what you have written and share them in an appropriate way at his retirement. Please email me at jmartin221@cox.net or send your written comments to the above mailbox.

Although the weather is not conducive to thinking about Golf, it is important to put in your plans the new Fort Hunt Sportsmen Golf Tournament date. This year we will be holding it the end of May. More on the tournament as it develops.

  • For those of you who could not make the 8th Annual Sportsmen's Golf Tournament, It took place Friday, October 19th at Fort Belvoir. The event was fun and successful. • September 2007 Newsletter

Redskins Raffle Drawing Dinner: The annual Raffle Dinner Drawing took place last night (September 6th) at Mount Vernon Country Club. Sam, the Banquet Manager, drew a winner for the Redskin's Season Tickets and the Barajas family won two season tickets to all the Redskin's home games this year. They live near Mount Vernon High School. Also, our new Club Officers were installed last night after unanimously being voted in at the August Dinner Meeting; Jim Martin - President, Chick Little - Vice President, Bob Wade - Treasurer, Frank Gulino - Sergeant-at-Arms, and Joe Gililland - Club Secretary. We had a fun, lively Sportsmen's crowd for the event.

  • Nationals Raffle Tickets: At the August Membership meeting we drew raffle tickets for the Nationals games. They were won by Michael Wade of Arlington. Michael won 2 tickets to 5 different National's games, along with two new Nationals baseball caps. Eric Henderson, Head Coach of the West Potomac Wolverines Football Team gave us a preview of the Wolverine's season and then drew the winning ticket.

  • Raffle Sales: We don't have the totals for this year's raffle yet. Our Raffle Chairman, Jim Martin, will be busy totaling up our take for 2007. As you know, our annual raffle is our single biggest source of income for the Club. Unfortunately, the demand for Redskins season tickets is low and has hurt our raffle totals for the past few years. The Sportsmen's Board has been discussing ideas for new sources of income for the Club, including renewed emphasis on our annual Golf tournament. YOUR ideas for fundraising are always welcome. If you have ideas, please contact our 2008 Raffle Chairman, Chick Little - littlecj@cox.net or our new Club President, Jim Martin - jmartin221@cox.net.

  • Annual Golf Tournament: Rick Genuario is coordinating our Sportsmen's Golf Tournament again this year. It is set for Friday, October 19th at Fort Belvoir. Please enlist interested golfers and 'form some foursomes'. See the attached file for more details. Save the date for some Sportsmen's fun and help us with our fundraising efforts.

  • The Redskins Tailgate Party: Is set for Sunday, November 11th - an NFC East game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It is a 1:00 PM game. Robert Hines is coordinating the event, so mark your calendars and plan on participating. We usually ask members to bring a dish to share and gather early in the parking lot to share some food and camaraderie. More details to follow.

  • FHSA Website: Please check the Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Website for the latest photos and news. Contact Scott Daley, our webmaster @ scott.daley@navy.mil if you have anything that you would like to see on the site. We are establishing links to various local businesses and athletic groups. Please check our website and share with others - especially those that may have an interest in joining our Club. It's www.forthuntsportsmen.com

  • New Members: If you know of other potential Club members, talk to them about the Club. Invite them along to our next membership meeting in October and have them meet the Sportsmen. Membership applications are on the website. New members are always welcome.

  • Personal: This will be my last Newsletter to you. Last night at the Raffle Dinner, we officially installed our new officers (see above) and I am stepping down after a year as your president. It was a pleasure serving as the president of the Fort Hunt Sportsmen and I hope that my "message" to the Club has made it's way through; Participate, Volunteer, and Stay Involved. The more you put into the Club, the more you'll get out of it. I'm proud of our service to the local schools and sports organizations and I'm proud of the Club's long and generous history in the Fort Hunt area. Our new president, Jim Martin, is a friendly & capable guy. Please provide him with the same cooperation and support that I was able to enjoy. Best of luck and much success to our hard working Officers and Board!
