Redskins & Nationals Raffle: You could feel it coming... it's as inevitable as hot dogs on the 4th of July! It's almost raffle time again! Jim Martin is the lucky Raffle Chairman this year - and having chaired last year - I know he can use your help.
The Swim Carnival (below) will kick-off the raffle season with 4th of July sales trailing close behind. Jim will need your help with Saturday morning street sales and will need you to 'grab a stack' of raffle tickets to sell on your own. If you know of local businesses that will help, contact us to coordinate. We'd like to have a BIG raffle season this year as this is our single, biggest source of income for the Club. So let's gear up and put together a great raffle season. Thanks! If you can help, contact Jim Martin at jmartin221@cox.net
Sportsmen's Roster: The 'Latest and Greatest' Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Member Roster is attached to this email. Please save the file to your computer desktop or other convenient place and use it to stay in contact with your fellow Sportsmen members. If you like, print it out and keep it in your desk drawer. You never know when you might need to contact a fellow member, so keep it handy.
Swim Carnival: Will be June 27th at Riverside Gardens Swim Club. Jim Shlesinger is coordinating this event and several of our Sportsmen are helping to sponsor. Approximately 500 swimmers, ages 5 through 18, coaches and lifeguards are expected to compete. Please come out to watch the event and give support to these local youth athletes. Ask Jim if he needs a hand, while you're at it... check our website (link below) for more details.
Bob Beatty Award Dinner: Took place at the Mount Vernon Country Club on May 17th and was a big success. We had some very special guests - former Bob Beatty Award winners and this year's winner, Mara Perscheid and her family. Our guest speaker was Mr. Willie Pile - a West Potomac H.S. & Va. Tech graduate and an NFL veteran who had a video presentation and a great upbeat speech for the crowd. Maria Perscheid was very gracious in accepting her award and even gave a short speech. Thanks to all the Sportsmen & guests that came out. It was a great evening.
The Nationals Tailgate Party: Took place on June 2nd at RFK. Unfortunately, the Nationals lost to the San Diego Padres, but it was a great party and a fun evening. Our thanks go out to Vicki Binkley who funded the Tailgate Party again this year. Frank Gulino did his usual superb job getting us tickets and Lee Gilmore did a great job getting it all organized. Cold beer, dogs and burgers DID rule the day. This was our last Nationals Tailgate under the shade trees at RFK as the team will be in their new stadium in 2008. If you missed it... you missed a great party. Next year's National's Tailgate may present a challenge to us, but we will somehow make it work.
Sportsmen Volunteers: Willie Pile ran a successful Football Camp & Life Skills Program at West Potomac High School. The Sportsmen helped sponsor the event. Several Sportsmen were there to help out and to support Willie and the positive message that he passes along to young athletes. Check Willie's website @ www.pilegroup.com.
FHSA Website: We are always looking for new items for the Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Website. Contact Scott Daley, our webmaster @ scott.daley@navy.mil if you have anything that you would like to see on the site. We are establishing links to The Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association, FHSA sponsors and other related websites. Please check our website and share with others - especially those that may have an interest in joining our Club. It's www.forthuntsportsmen.com
The June Membership Meeting: Was the National's Tailgate party mentioned above.
The July Membership Meeting: In July we will be back to our regular local restaurant rotation. The Dinner Meeting will be held July 12th, place TBD. We will know more from the Board Meeting later this month. Stand by and you will be notified.
New Members - if you know of potential Club members, our monthly dinner meetings are the perfect opportunities to introduce them to the club and to some of the fun activities that we have. Check around - you probably have friends or neighbors that would fit right in with the club... ask them along to one of our events.
Personal: We hope you're having a great summer so far. Summer vacation season is here and the Sportsmen's Board and Officers hope that you will have fun on your outings, but please be careful. We'd like to see you return from your vacations in one piece... that way we can get some help selling all these Raffle tickets we have! Just kidding... but, we DO need the help!
Joe Gililland
President, Fort Hunt Sportsmen's Association
