January 2008 Newsletter
The next Sportsmen's Dinner Meeting will be Thursday, January 10th at Mikes Italian Restaurant. Cocktails will begin at 7 with dinner being served at 8 p.m. Coach Henderson has accepted my invitation to give us a presentation on the recently completed West Potomac Football season, which included a return to the playoffs. I also asked him to extend an invitation to Jimmy Bennett, the 6'8" 265 lb offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, etc., who has accepted a scholarship to Division One University of Connecticut.
The Valentine's Dance is set for Saturday, February 9th. Mount Vernon Country Club has confirmed our date. Lee Gilmore has confirmed the DJ. Harry Shackelford will be taking reservations at the meeting on the 10th. If you are not able to attend the meeting, please send Harry an email (hshackelford1@cox.net) indicating how many people will be part of your group. Price for the dinner dance TBD, but will likely be the same as last year, $110 per couple. Robert Hines will be coordinating the door prizes for the event. Please give Robert a call if you wish to donate a door prize. This is our premier event that includes our spouses. It is a fun event. Let Harry know as soon as possible how many will be attending as part of your group.
As a reminder, Jeff Dietze has announced his retirement as the West Potomac High School Athletic Director. Jeff will be leaving at the end of January, 2008. The FHSA Board would like to recognize Jeff's contributions to the Fort Hunt area at his Retirement Ceremony. Those of you who have known Jeff over the years are encouraged to send me a sentence or two on some of the significant contributions he has made during the years. I will take what you have written and share them in an appropriate way at his retirement. Please email me at jmartin221@cox.net or send your written comments to the above mailbox.
Although the weather is not conducive to thinking about Golf, it is important to put in your plans the new Fort Hunt Sportsmen Golf Tournament date. This year we will be holding it the end of May. More on the tournament as it develops.
Jim Martin, President - 2008
